How to merge PDF files on iPhone or Android
A job form or a school portal often wants one PDF, while the pages sit in separate files on your phone. The Files app on iPhone, and Files or Google Drive on most Android phones, can open and share a PDF. They do not offer a merge command. Menu names vary by version. If you do not see merge or combine, use the browser. Merge PDF joins the files in Safari or Chrome on the phone, so nothing is uploaded. The download is named merged.pdf, and your original files are not changed.

What you can add from the phone
Open Merge PDF and tap the box labelled “Add PDF, image, Word, and Excel files”. On iPhone, choose the file from Files, iCloud Drive, Downloads or On My iPhone. On Android, look in Downloads or Drive. Select several files if the picker allows it, or add them one at a time. Save an email attachment to the phone first.
The box accepts PDF, Word (.docx), Excel (.xls and .xlsx), JPG and PNG. An old .doc file can be selected, but the merge then stops and names that file. The message tells you to open it in Word or Google Docs and save it as .docx. PowerPoint is rejected as an unsupported type. Photos saved as HEIC, which many iPhones use, are rejected too. Export a JPG from the Photos app first. Look for JPEG or a “most compatible” option.
You need at least two files. With one file, Merge stays off. Each file can be up to 200 MB, and you can add up to 100 files. A very long list still depends on the phone's memory. An empty file is turned away.
Step by step: merge PDF files on your phone
Keep the originals somewhere you can find them. The tool does not overwrite those files. The download is named merged.pdf until you rename it, so the two are easy to mix up.
- 1Open Merge PDF in Safari on iPhone, or in Chrome on Android.
- 2Tap the add box and choose the PDFs from Files, Downloads, iCloud Drive or Google Drive.
- 3Put the files in order. Each row has Move up and Move down. On a phone those buttons are easier than dragging. The merged PDF follows the list: every page of the first file, then every page of the second.
- 4Tap X to remove a file. The screen shows the file count and the total size. Page thumbnails appear only while a single PDF is selected.
- 5Tap Merge. The label shows the count, such as “Merge 3 files”. On a narrow screen the button stays at the bottom. Wait for “Merged PDF ready” and “Ready to download”.
- 6Read the size and the page count. Use the pencil to rename merged.pdf, for example to Surname-Certificates.pdf.
- 7Tap Download. On iPhone the file goes to Downloads in the Files app, unless you picked another folder. On Android it goes to your Downloads folder. Share hands the PDF to another app when the phone allows it. Otherwise Share downloads the file.
- 8Open the download. Check that each file is there, in the order you set.
Put the files in an order a reviewer can follow
Follow the form if it names an order. If it does not, a common order is the cover letter, then the CV, then certificates or a transcript. That is a habit, not a rule. Merge keeps every page of a file together. You cannot move one page in front of another from this screen.
When you also have Word files or photos, and you need to drop or rearrange single pages, use Application PDF. It shows thumbnails, can remove a page, and can aim for a size limit. It accepts up to 20 documents.
Photos, Word and spreadsheets in the same merge
A JPG or PNG is placed on its own US Letter page, centered, with a small margin. The picture keeps its shape. A large photo is scaled down to fit. A small image stays small. Words in that photo cannot be selected. A scan already saved as a PDF is copied in as pages, and those pages stay pictures.
A .docx is converted in the browser, then its pages are added. Text uses standard PDF fonts, so letters can differ from Word, and a text box or an unusual template can shift. Check those pages. If the message says some characters cannot be encoded, Merge has stopped and does not ask you to continue. Convert that file with Word to PDF, which asks before keeping those words as images, or export a PDF from Word or Google Docs. Export menu names vary by version. Then merge the PDF.
An Excel file, .xlsx or .xls, becomes PDF pages of the sheet, fitted onto Letter pages. A wide sheet is scaled down, so small numbers can be hard to read. The result is not a spreadsheet you can sort or filter.
If one file will not merge
The reason appears in red under the files, and as a short notice. It names the file when it can.
A PDF that still asks for a password will not merge. Unlock it with a password you already know, download the copy that opens without a password, and add that copy. Unlock PDF does not guess a password. If the password is wrong, or the encryption is one this browser tool cannot open, it says so and does not produce a copy.
PowerPoint is rejected as an unsupported type. Export the slides to PDF, then merge that PDF. A damaged file can fail too. Export it again. If the phone runs out of memory, merge fewer files at a time.
Check the page count, then the upload limit
When the page count can be read, a page-count check appears under the download. It shows how many pages the new file has. You can add a reference PDF, such as a blank form or an earlier file you were told to match. A match means both files have the same number of pages. It does not mean the content matches.
Compare page-by-page reads text only. Each page is marked Match, Differs, Only in your merge, or Only in reference. Scans often have no text, so two picture pages can be marked Match even when the images differ. Open the PDF and look.
Merging does not shrink the file. The download is about as large as the files you added, and a photo on a new page can make it a little larger. If the form sets a limit, such as 1 MB, compress the download and read the size on that result. Do not password-protect a file a portal must open. Rename merged.pdf before you send it.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I merge PDFs on my iPhone without installing an app?
- Yes. Open Merge PDF in Safari, add at least two PDFs, set the order with Move up and Move down, then download. The Files app can open and share a PDF. It does not include a merge command.
- Does the same method work on Android?
- Yes. Open Merge PDF in Chrome or another current browser, add the PDFs from Downloads or Drive, and tap Download. The file goes to your Downloads folder. Files and Google Drive on most phones do not join PDFs.
- Are the PDFs uploaded from my phone?
- No. Merge runs in your browser. The files stay on your phone. Nothing is saved until you tap Download or Share.
- Can I merge a password-protected PDF?
- Not while it still asks for a password. Unlock it first with the password you were given, then merge that copy. The tool does not guess passwords.
- Can I reorder pages inside one of the PDFs?
- No. Merge orders whole files. Every page of the first file comes before every page of the second. To drop or rearrange single pages, use Application PDF.
