How to convert a Word document to PDF on iPhone or Android

You've got a CV, assignment or form as a Word file on your phone, and the upload page wants a PDF. You don't need a laptop. iPhones and Android phones can both create PDFs, the free Word and Google Docs apps can export them, and you can also convert straight from your mobile browser. Here are the options, from quickest to most flexible. Menu names vary a little between app and system versions, so look for the closest match.

Open the Word to PDF tool and follow along.

Open Word to PDF

Option 1: Convert in your mobile browser (no app needed)

This works the same on iPhone and Android, and the document isn't uploaded — it's converted in your browser.

Step by step: Word to PDF in your browser

Open Safari, Chrome or another browser on your phone, then:

  1. 1Go to WordToPDFHub's Word to PDF tool.
  2. 2Tap the drop area and choose your .docx file from Files, Downloads, Google Drive or iCloud Drive.
  3. 3Keep “Selectable text” selected so the PDF contains real text.
  4. 4Tap Convert to PDF and check the preview.
  5. 5Tap Download. On iPhone the PDF goes to the Downloads folder in the Files app; on Android it goes to your Downloads folder.

Option 2: Use the Microsoft Word app

If the Word app is installed, open the document, tap the three-dot (more) menu and look for Export, Save as or Share — then choose PDF. Some features of the Word app need a Microsoft account; exporting a PDF for viewing and sharing is generally available on phones.

Option 3: Use the Google Docs app

Open the .docx in Google Docs, tap the three-dot menu, then Share & export → Save as → PDF document. Google Docs converts Word formatting to its own, so check that page breaks, tables and fonts still look right.

Option 4: Use the built-in print option

Both systems can turn anything you can print into a PDF — no extra app needed.

  • iPhone: open the document (for example from Files or Mail), tap Share → Print, then spread two fingers outward on the page preview. It opens as a PDF; tap Share again and choose Save to Files.
  • Android: open the document in a viewer, tap Share or the menu → Print, choose Save as PDF as the printer, then tap the download (PDF) button and pick a folder.

Which option should you choose?

For a CV or job application, choose a method that keeps real, selectable text and then check the result. The browser method and the Word app both keep text selectable. The print method also keeps text in most apps, but margins and page sizes can change, so look at every page.

Avoid taking screenshots of your document and turning them into a PDF. That creates an image-only file: the text can't be searched or copied, and application systems may not be able to read it.

Check the PDF before you upload it

Open the PDF and scroll through every page. Make sure nothing has moved onto an extra page and that special characters, bullets and accents look right.

If the upload form has limits, the PDF Submission Checker shows the file size, page count, whether the file is password-protected and whether every page has selectable text. If the file is too big, Compress PDF can bring it under 200 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB or your own limit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert Word to PDF on my phone for free?
Yes. The built-in print option on iPhone and Android, the Google Docs app and WordToPDFHub's browser tool are all free. The Word app also exports PDFs on phones.
Do I need to install an app to convert Word to PDF on iPhone?
No. You can use the built-in Print → pinch-out → Save to Files method, or convert in Safari with a browser-based tool.
Is my document uploaded when I use the browser tool?
No. WordToPDFHub's Word to PDF tool converts the file in your browser, so the document stays on your phone.
Will the text in my PDF be selectable?
Yes with the browser tool's default “Selectable text” mode and with app exports. Screenshots turned into PDFs are images, so their text isn't selectable.
Can I convert an old .doc file on my phone?
WordToPDFHub supports .docx only. Open the .doc in the Word or Google Docs app and save it as .docx or export it as PDF directly.
